Artist’s Description: I took myself to Catalina to sketch for a couple of days early in my time in LA…I remember getting off the boat and sitting on the rocks looking towards the town. This was the closest I felt to traveling internationally upon arriving in California besides visiting Venice Beach, which definitely felt like another country. Over the years, many paintings came from the five sketches I made of Catalina in those days. The town of Avalon included two things I loved: colorful houses on a hillside and boats.
I emptied more giant tubes of oil paint to create this work than I ever had on a painting before. The lime green in this painting was brought to me from friends in Germany.
