A colorful place full of colorful characters is one way I would describe the unique gritty energy of Venice, California. The title “Boulevard Smile” comes from the many occasions this corner along South Venice Boulevard made me smile. The presence of vibrantly colored buildings behind the traffic light reminded me of the flow of creativity present in so many people who reside in Venice. I painted this piece in particular because I fell in love with the moment the woman in the watermelon colored dress crossed the street. I felt thankful she decided to cross the street in that very moment and that earlier her decision to wear that dress would unknowingly inspire a piece of art.
