Dreams in Concrete | 48″ x 48″ x 2.5″ | ink, oil & acrylic on canvas | by Brooke Harker | SOLD
original painting by Brooke Harker. Artist’s Description: Before I lived in Los Angeles, I worked as a civilian for US ARMY Europe in Germany. My goal was to have a “normal” job working with children and have weekends to travel, write and paint. In going to Europe, I wanted to get away from diving deep into emotional territory as I had been doing in theatre studies…or so I thought. However, taking a job with the military 2 weeks prior to 9/11 didn’t really create an environment free of emotional territory. I worked with 50-120 kids per day, children who were used to moving, all over the...

original painting by Brooke Harker. During a visit to Sicily with my sister, I wandered away from the streets of Trapani on a windy summer day. I felt called near the sea where I found a collection of boats tied beneath the harbor wall. My heart leapt to discover the treasure of this view. I couldn’t stop smiling. I had envisioned painting boats for years. I climbed onto the jetty as a mist of sea jumped to greet me. I probably took over a hundred photos from this view and then sat in joy for quite some time. In the midst of creating this piece, I processed what it felt like to...

original painting available at Lu Martin Galleries, in Laguna Beach, CA. by Brooke Harker. I fell in love with a photograph of Tijuana so I bought it, put it on my shelf and looked at it for about 6 years. It made me happy. I wanted to contact the photographer to tell him how much I loved the photo, but then I couldn’t read his signature of the artist. The contact information for the gallery stopped working so I couldn’t track him down, yet I am thankful for the vision of that photographer. His work became a springboard for me to create this abstracted interpretation of Tijuana, broken...

original painting by Brooke Harker, 2011. Beverly Glen is one of my favorite roads in Los Angeles. This painting came from a sketch made on the Beverly Hills side of the canyon. I felt a little scared of nearby dogs that barked while I sketched the inspiration for this. Luckily, while I painted this in my studio, the happy kind neighborhood dogs Margaret and Jamie visited me daily. Jamie liked to drag his belly in the grass next to my easel.

original painting by Brooke Harker. This painting drew inspiration from years as a special events entertainer for children in Los Angeles. Concrete Castles came from a sketch made while I went to Hollywood to repair a Rapunzel wig. I had designed hair for many theatre productions in the past, so I foolishly thought I had the skills to restyle a carefully crafted floor length blonde wig created by Hollywood professionals. In doing so, I was up all night with little success. I perhaps had 30 minutes of sleep and shed a lot of tears in frustration since I’d rented the wig from a friend who was...
