Art Show From A Bathtub!  #snlartshows

It amused me this past weekend to have an art show from my bathtub.

As Alyson Stanfield and I talked about in episode 62 of her podcast (link shared above), these from home aren’t about being perfect.  It’s always good to find a reason to laugh.

Towards Open Waters by Brooke Harker 34″ x 60″ ink, oil & acrylic on canvas at Lu Martin Galleries

Where Are Your Open Waters?

The title of this painting, Toward Open Waters (now available at Lu Martin Galleries in Laguna Beach, CA) was completed on July 4, 2020 and refers to sailing in the direction of freedom. That freedom may be in ones mind or in the world around us. I tend to believe that the first place to experience freedom is within, because that is a state of being that can’t be taken from us by events in the world. There is a place of knowing and an empowerment in the choice to pick an optimal perspective that exists regardless of circumstances.

This painting is also the first painting that I fully started and completed during the stay-at-home time of 2020. I share more of the meaning embedded in this painting in an informal video link below.

Now OPEN At Gabba Gallery On-Line- “Remix: The Art Of Music” 60+ Artists

Hello Friends–What music inspires you?  How has that music influenced or been the soundtrack for your life? Does it move you to make art or look at your life like art?

This is my third year participating in “Remix: The Art of Music,” 60 + artists curated by Jason Ostro & Elena Jacobson at Gabba Gallery, which donates a portion of the proceeds to Adopt the Arts in LA to help fun music education programs for children in local schools.

This exhibit was selected by LA Weekly for Art Pick this Week!
by Shana Nys Dambrot

Now OPEN On-line for 2020!

See the entire exhibit at: https://www.gabbagallery.com/remix-2020-art

Or click to my painting “Heart Song” inspired by Brandi Carlile here: https://www.gabbagallery.com/remix-2020-art/brooke-harker-heart-song

This is a little different than the cityscape paintings I normally share, however my paintings are always inspired by people and their actions and choices.

See more below about why I chose the image of Brandi Carlile to be the face of my art in this exhibit.

“Heart Song” by Brooke Harker 16″ x 20″ ink & acrylic on canvas available at Gabba Gallery

“Heart Song” references discovering the music of the singer songwriter Brandi Carlile during quarantine…a multiple time Grammy award winning musician, and I just found her!!!:)) This painting can’t capture what her music has done for my soul, however I did do some air guitar moves between paint strokes. The title “Heart Song” points to her song “Wherever Is Your Heart,” and that is mainly what I listened to while painting this…and also “The Eye” although I found her through her song “Dying Day.”

The title “Heart Song” points to her song “Wherever Is Your Heart,” and that is mainly what I listened to while painting this…and also “The Eye” although I found her through her song “Dying Day.”

Now I listen to her so much while painting my cityscapes.  Although I often paint in silence, I love to put Brandi’s music on a headset and dance while making decisions about what to do next. I know my moves have a bit of a Muppet vibe, although in my imagination I have the skills of a back up dancer for a rockstar:)

I am in awe and deeply grateful for the divine energy that Brandi Carlile brings to this earth through her music…and am thankful that she is in the soundtrack for what I paint for the world.

What a blessing on this planet.

What music has blessed you? Send me a message, and I will listen when I paint!

Head in the Clouds?…Meet Nichole McDaniel

Posted by on Feb 21, 2020 in Updates | 0 comments

I’ve said for awhile that I want to share the stories of other artists, especially those who have come across my path and make an impact in my life.

artist Nichole McDaniel painting her triptych, Daydream -60″ x 20″ each, acrylic on canvas

Nichole McDaniel and I met at Lu Martin Galleries, in Laguna Beach, CA, where we have exhibited together for the past few years.

I was excited when she joined our gallery family because I’d seen her work previously and loved her perspective and use of color. I’d put her on my bucket list of artists to exhibit with one day.

She was gorgeous, talented, full of life, and had a positive attitude.  Meeting her also intimidated me. I felt an emotional reaction in her presence that I hadn’t experienced with another artist before. Her easy-going happy energy reminded me that I felt the opposite. I’d been suppressing some old wounds and as a result felt stale and bit old. Initially, in meeting Nichole, I thought it might be a sign that I was indeed old.

Instead of keeping that story, or staying away from her for fear of being reminded that I didn’t feel entirely good about myself, I decided that I wanted to come alive again.  Meeting her was a catalyst for that desire…and I am deeply thankful to her for inspiring that in me.

artist Nichole McDaniel painting her diptych, Written with Love 60″ x 20″ ea. -acrylic on canvas

Similar to her artwork, Nichole walks and interacts with people as easily as clouds float through the sky. Yet she has also known challenges. When I learned the story of what inspired her to paint clouds, I was blown away. It was a story of grit and perseverance. I wouldn’t have guessed that someone who’d gone through what she had would show no signs of being a victim of circumstances or the past.

“I never wanted to let the past define me, ” she told me.

Although her story isn’t mine to tell, I can tell you to go see her! Her story is written in her clouds.

Go meet her and encounter her light for yourself because she is bright!

And she may remind you to dream of shining bright too:)

There is a lot of dark art out there that expresses the depth of pain that we go through as humans.

I believe it takes the most depth to go through life’s contrasts and still rise up. Nichole McDaniel does this in her work. She chooses what she wants to put into the world and inspires others to do the same.

We all have such choices.

One night only to see A Stride in Bloom in person!

Although this painting found it’s forever home a few days before the opening, I’m so excited that the new collector has allowed it to stay in California long enough to exhibit with it’s sister painting, Roman Holiday (see below). There’s nothing like a sister.

What I brought back from Italy…

Beyond bringing back inspiration from my 2019 trip to Italy, I did something that absolutely terrified me.  I had some of the paintings I’d made there packed up and shipped to the Los Angeles. Although the paintings were of LA, they were born on a farm in Italy during a residency in 2015.

Driving Fire by Brooke Harker (59″ x 66″- ink, oil & acrylic on canvas) being packed in Italy and LA bound

Even though my paintings have shipped to collectors in different parts of the world previously, there was something much more vulnerable to me in the risk of these artworks traveling overseas. They were part of one of my greatest adventures and each contained so many memories of a life-changing time.

Painting Arcobaleno Nights of Hollywood (38″ x 74″- ink, oil & acrylic on canvas) on a farm in Paliano, Italy.

I’d trusted the curator in Italy, Alfio Borghese to tour them since 2015. They had solo exhibits in Rome, Genoa, and Frosinone along with group exhibits in Boville Ernica and two Bienales in Frosninone & Anagni. It only took a little more guts to send them over the ocean and have faith they would be okay.

Patrons at Satura Art Gallery in Genoa, Italy viewing a collection of Los Angeles artworks by Brooke Harker,

Although there were some interesting surprises in the shipping process, they all arrived safely in Los Angeles. (side note: for anyone looking for shipping angels in the ‘City of Angels’… I highly recommend Castelli Art & Framing…they are life savers on the LA side).

Five of these artworks will debut at Lu Martin Galleries for the first time in the U.S. this Thursday February 6, 2020 from 6-9pm during the Laguna Beach Artwalk.

Scroll below to see which five!

If you have had your eye on any of these before and avoided overseas shipping costs, you are welcome to now call dibs and contact Greg or Lu at the gallery before the opening.
